Inside CHIME: CHIME Members to Be Honored at HIMSS Gala in March

Seven members of CHIME will receive prestigious awards on March 8 at the HIMSS Awards Gala in Las Vegas. Other members will be recognized as chapter leaders and for other accomplishments.

As CHIME reported earlier, Randy McCleese, CIO of Methodist Hospital in Henderson, Ky., will receive the 2017 John E. Gall Jr. CIO of the Year award. The award is given annually to a CIO who has shown significant leadership and commitment to the healthcare industry during his or her career. The recipient is selected jointly by the boards of CHIME and HIMSS. He has been a member of CHIME since 1998 and has held numerous leadership positions, including a member of the CHIME Board of Trustees from 2012-2015; CHIME Board chair in 2014; CHIME Foundation Board chair in 2015; and chair of the CHIME Policy Steering Committee in 2015. In 2016, he won both the CHIME Federal Public Policy Award for CIO Leadership and the Outstanding Service Award.

Colin Banas, M.D., will receive the HIMSS/AMDIS Physician Executive Leader of the Year Award. The HIMSS-AMDIS Physician Executive Leader of the Year Award recognizes a physician leader who demonstrates significant leadership in optimizing health engagement and care outcomes through information technology.

Banas is a board-certified internist, CMIO and an associate professor in internal medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. He heads the Office of Clinical Transformation, a group of clinicians and support staff that drives innovation and optimization into the application of information technology at the point of care. His interests center on novel forms of clinical decision support – those that are outside of the realm of traditional rules and alerts – and include real-time dashboarding for the health system’s Safety Dashboard and Early Warning System and intuitive usability designs.

Liz Johnson, chair of the CHIME Foundation Board and CIO of Acute Care Hospitals & Applied Clinical Informatics at Tenet Healthcare Corporation, will receive the Distinguished Fellows Service Award. The award recognizes commendable and long-standing contributions to HIMSS made by a fellow member. 

In addition, Susan Snedaker, director of IT infrastructure and operations at Tucson Medical Center, will be honored with the Book of the Year Award for “Leading Healthcare IT: Managing to Succeed” and three CHIME members – Diane Carr, CIO at North Bronx Healthcare Network; Patricia Hale, M.D., Ph.D., associate director of informatics at Albany Medical Center; and Michael Zaroukian, M.D., Ph.D., vice president and CMIO at Sparrow Health System – will receive HIMSS North America Board of Directors Service awards.
