By Arika Lycan, Specialist, CHIME Foundation
CHIME Foundation’s 25th anniversary celebration is coming up at the end of October, at our signature event, the 2018 CHIME Fall CIO Forum. As a retrospective on the past 25 years of supporting healthcare IT firms of all sizes, we’re featuring articles with insights and voices from one of our long-term members in each month’s Insight.
This piece is one of several in our series on Founding Firms: Celebrating 25 Years of Robust Partnership. CHIME Foundation’s inaugural year ended with just 15 Foundation firms, at least six of which are still active members today.
Our featured partner firm this month is 3M HIS, with input from Ann Chenoweth, senior director of industry relations, 3M Health Information Systems. She’s been with 3M since 2001.
Q: What are your earliest memories of CHIME and CHIME Foundation?
A: Our earliest memories are of an association which provided a terrific forum for CIOs and senior healthcare IT leaders. The education was of high value and the forums provided members and foundation firms a wonderful opportunity to network, learn from industry peers, and exchange best practice ideas.
Q: Do you know why 3M HIS decided to join the then-newly formed CHIME Foundation?
A: 3M HIS strongly believed in CHIME’s mission to advance the role of the CIOs and senior healthcare IT leaders through education, collaboration and advocacy in support of improved health and healthcare in our communities. 3M wanted to lend our support to CHIME’s mission and the members it served.
Q: How has 3M HIS’ healthcare-focused work grown and transformed in the past 25 years?
A: Since 1994, 3M HIS has grown from a company that focused primarily on coding and payment methodologies to performance measurement and management solutions, analysis and strategic services that help our clients move from volume to value-based care. 3M’s software focuses on innovative computer-assisted coding, clinical documentation improvement, performance monitoring, quality outcomes reporting and terminology management. Today, approximately 80 percent of hospitals in the U.S. utilize solutions developed by 3M HIS. Our footprint also continues to expand into the payer and U.S. markets.
Q: In what ways has CHIME Foundation been able to support those changing needs?
A: Over the years, we have seen CHIME’s strategy continue to evolve to support CIOs and senior healthcare IT leaders globally to navigate the ever-changing healthcare landscape through expanded education, advocacy and certifications. 3M is honored to be one of the founding Foundation firms.
CHIME has been a tremendous value to 3M HIS. CHIME has supported us in building and deepening relationships with CIOs and senior healthcare IT leaders. It has provided us with the opportunity to both share 3M expertise and learn from others through focus groups, sponsorships, committee memberships, surveys, forums and college-live education.
Thanks for your thoughts on the CHIME Foundation and 3M HIS’ significant partnership. Next month we will profile another long-term member. Stayed tuned for more information as we move closer to our big anniversary celebration at CHIME18!
