Dr. Ben Mansalis of INTEGRIS Health wins CHIME Innovator of the Year Award
ANN ARBOR, MI, Nov. 11, 2021 – As the COVID-19 pandemic triggered crisis after crisis, healthcare leaders deployed technology to solve unprecedented problems with innovation. Dr. Ben Mansalis led his team at INTEGRIS Health in the co-development of the first enterprise virtual care platform that incorporated all components of virtual care through a single digital front door. By allowing patients to be cared for safely at home with their families, this innovation eased the patient surge, helped prevent further spread of the virus and freed hospital beds so critically ill patients could receive care. For this invaluable and timely advance in digital healthcare, the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) has named Dr. Ben Mansalis as the 2021 CHIME Innovator of the Year.
“Ben and his team made a tremendous difference for patients and healthcare providers by driving rapid innovation at a time when it was necessary to save lives,” said CHIME Board Chair John Kravitz, Corporate CIO at Geisinger Health. “Innovation is most valuable when it serves human need and makes possible what at first seemed impossible. CHIME is delighted to honor this outstanding work.”
The innovative virtual care platform, HealthNxt, transcends traditional healthcare silos, incorporating everything from telemedicine to remote patient monitoring (RPM) to an AI-enabled symptom checker and patient acquisition tools. Additional advanced features such as eICU are now under development.
“The almost overnight deployment of RPM in response to the COVID-19 pandemic would not have been possible without a platform strategy,” said Dr. Mansalis. “A platform approach to digital healthcare is an innovation force multiplier. It enables the portability of clinical technology and the rapid iteration of care improvements across settings and disease states.”
The Innovator of the Year Award is given annually to a member of CHIME whose creative application of technology has demonstrated value to their healthcare organization with an innovative solution that can be shared widely with the CHIME membership.
