NewYork-Presbyterian’s Daniel Barchi to Receive CIO of the Year Award from CHIME
ANN ARBOR, MI, Oct. 13, 2021 – From Daniel Barchi’s time in the U.S. Navy to his years of outstanding work as a healthcare leader, he has demonstrated remarkable talent elevated by a willingness to serve and put others first. Barchi’s visionary outlook has forged a new paradigm for how a CIO’s leadership role can make a significant difference to a healthcare organization’s mission. His dedication to digital transformation has accelerated national adoption of electronic medical records (EMR), artificial intelligence and telemedicine. In recognition of Barchi’s exceptional contributions to digital healthcare, the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) has named Barchi the 2021 CIO of the Year. The award is given annually to a CIO who has demonstrated significant leadership and a lifetime of achievement in the healthcare IT industry. The recipient is selected by the CIO of the Year Award committee comprised of past recipients and is approved by the Board of Directors of CHIME.
Barchi’s experience prepared him to help lead the clinical response to the greatest challenge that healthcare has faced in a lifetime. When COVID-19 struck in early 2020, Barchi and his team expanded telemedicine capacity five-fold, developed predictive models for ventilator use, and helped double intensive care unit (ICU) bed capacity to allow NewYork-Presbyterian to care for thousands of COVID-19 positive patients. He is committed to development of future leaders; having served as CIO at three academic medical centers, he has been an active mentor to members of his team, ten of whom have gone on to become healthcare CIOs themselves.
“Daniel Barchi has distinguished himself as a leader in healthcare technology. He is an innovator who uses AI and other advanced systems to solve operational needs and improve clinical quality,” said CHIME Board of Trustees Chair John Kravitz, CIO of Geisinger Health. “His vision for rapid implementation and standardized systems throughout healthcare organizations is being adopted as a global best practice.”
“Daniel shares his insight with our CIO community in countless ways,” said CHIME President and CEO Russell Branzell. “In the early days of COVID, he shared lessons learned with CIOs and other healthcare leaders across the nation in phone calls, texts, emails, and even podcasts to prepare them for what was to come. He has also been an early proponent of artificial intelligence and advanced analytics, and he helps other CIOs recognize their potential for improved quality and patient outcomes.”
Barchi is CIO and Group Senior Vice President at NewYork-Presbyterian, an integrated academic health care system affiliated with two top-ranked medical schools, Weill Cornell Medicine and Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons.
Barchi’s career represents the highest achievement in what a CIO can do with technology, with people, and as a healthcare leader. He has been an active member of CHIME since he first became a CIO in 2006. He is a member of CHIME’s Policy Steering Committee and Foundation Development Committee. He speaks nationally on healthcare technology issues, has served on the faculty of CHIME’s CIO Boot Camp, and is a frequent contributor to CHIME’s Innovation Beyond the Edge programs.
Barchi will be honored on October 28 at the CHIME21 Fall Forum in San Diego, California. More information about the CHIME21 Fall Forum is available here.
