CHIME Names Nuance Communications VP Kali Durgampudi 2018 Foundation Industry Leader

SAN DIEGO, CA, Nov. 1, 2018 – When the public policy team at the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) put out an urgent call for a subject matter expert to travel to Capitol Hill to brief the Congressional Artificial Intelligence Caucus on the technology’s potential, Kali Durgampudi, vice president of innovation and mobile architecture at Nuance Communications, answered. And when chief information officers (CIOs) in India and CHIME wanted to create CHIME’s first chapter outside the U.S., Durgampudi was there to make it happen.

 

Today, CHIME recognized Durgampudi for his many contributions with the highest honor given to a Foundation firm member. He was awarded the prestigious CHIME Foundation Industry Leader Award at the 2018 CHIME Fall CIO Forum in San Diego. The award recognizes a Foundation firm representative who has demonstrated exceptional dedication and made outstanding contributions to the healthcare industry, CHIME and the CHIME Foundation.

 

Durgampudi, who serves on CHIME’s International Advisory Board, also is helping to establish ties with innovation centers around the world. But of all his contributions, he is most proud of his work helping establish the CHIME India Chapter, which launched in 2017.

 

“When I raised my hand and said, ‘Let me help you with India,’ CIOs in India did not know what CHIME was and did not realize the positive impact that the Foundation could and would have. CHIME India is now the only CHIME entity outside the U.S. — with a board as well as nationwide conferences and meetings. The top eight CIOs in the country are on the board and out of the registered CIO members more than 60 percent are CHCIO-certified.”

 

On Nov. 30, 2017, the CHIME India Chapter hosted its first CHIME Leadership Academy in Mumbai, with faculty from CHIME providing educational sessions followed by panel discussions that included CHIME Foundation members. Durgampudi said healthcare IT executives in India have gained valuable knowledge and skills from their associations with CHIME, but India also offers lessons that could benefit domestic members. For instance, India has something akin to a national patient health ID program, while the U.S. continues to wrestle with the issue.
